4 Functional Guide For Taking Care Of Your Small Puppy

Filed under: News and Views - 19 Feb 2009 from author

If you are thinking about buying a small dog as a pet, remember that for the most part, they aren’t much different to a larger version. The small dog has some specific needs and the owner has to make the necessary compromise whenever needed. If you look at the daily dog care schedules, you would also notice the several adaptations that have been made to them.

What are you going to feed your dog?

You must consider the size of the food you buy them from the grocery store as they won’t be able to eat the normal type of food ordinarily purchased for a regular size pooch. You’ll need to be sure to buy a kibble designed to fit his smaller mouth (these are easy to find among the premium dog food brands). Fortunately, canned food should not be a problem and will definitely be easier to obtain.

Having a place for them to exercise:

Most dogs just require a properly fenced in yard for them to be safe - well that’s what the general belief is. Well so you would think but remember that larger dogs may be fine confined this way but a smaller dog may find ways to escape. An important safety concern is that no fence would protect your tiny pet from the prying eyes of hawks flying overhead as they are famous for stooping down to snatch away the Lilliputians and smaller puppies. An answer to this might be to have a fully enclosed run or area for them to run around in.

How to train your small dog:

While tiny dogs aren’t any harder to train than large dogs, the consensus of many pet experts is that many of them end up spoiled. Be it a pocket or purse-fitting dog, remember that the small dog still belong to that species of animals which follow pack behavior, and incidentally the dog and not the owner leads the pack. It may seem like a minor matter but just because they are diminutive and the mess they leave might not be much, it doesn’t mean they do not need to be house trained. Dogs are naturally working creatures with many types bred purely for this function so this should also refer to your pet too. Have him sit or do tricks before you give him a tasty treat or even his meal.

Shopping online for small dog collars:

You can buy small dog collars online and at great discount prices. Today’s small dog collars come in many different designs. Find the perfect new small dog collar that matches your dogs personality. Just remember when you buy the collar you want it to be loose enough where the dog is comfortable but not to loose that it comes off.

Doing something about the way your dog looks:

Small dogs have some particular requirements when it comes to grooming you need to bear in mind. Firstly, as they do not get the same type of outdoor exercise that a larger dog does whereby their nails are trimmed automatically, tiny dogs require their nails trimmed on a more regular basis. Indoor dogs do not get the same sort of regular outdoor exercise on rough surfaces that controls their nail growth like a larger dog so they will need to be trimmed more often. Brushing his teeth twice a week is mandatory, especially if he is on soft canned foods. Small dog care is not that different for a large one except you have to be aware of certain needs that will affect a smaller animal. While each requirement may seem small and insignificant, but when you do it with earnestness, it can make a huge difference in the way you keep a dog.

Proper Methods of Shih Tzu Puppy Care

Filed under: News and Views - 18 Feb 2009 from author

A shih tzu puppy may be a wonderful addition to your family but you have to be versed in how to care for these delicate puppies.Shih tzu puppy care is not as complicated as say, beagle puppy care, because shih tzu puppies do not need much exercise or to go outside often. However shih tzu puppies do need a lot of rest during their first few weeks of life and you need to be careful not to play with them too much during this time.It is also essential to keep shih tzus from feeling any stress because this can have detrimental effects.

The Importance of Love and Attention in Shih Tzu Puppy Care

Like any breed, shih tzu puppies need love and attention but this breed is particularly needy.Shih tzu puppy care may be difficult for people who are forced to leave their puppy alone for an extended period. In order to thrive, shih tzu puppies need constant love and attention. If you have a busy schedule and don’t think you will be able to spend much time with your puppy, you might want to reconsider getting a shih tzu.

Leave your shih tzu puppy with a big stuffed animal as a companion and leave him raw hide bones to chew on.Shih tzu puppies need bones and chewing toys during their teething stage because otherwise they tend to chew on wooden furniture.

Shih tzu puppy care and training is made easier by the fact that shih tzu puppies are very good at learning and following commands.  Shih tzu puppies respond well to the “ee” sound so you should give them a name that incorporates this sound.  If you do so, you’ll find that when you give commands your shih tzu will respond more quickly.  When your shih tzu does something wrong such as by eliminating in the wrong place, never respond by hitting him. Scolding goes a long way.

Use potty pads for your shih tzu to eliminate on.  Shih tzu puppies are fast learners and will eliminate on potty pads.  You will be able to tell when your shih tzu puppy wants to eliminate because he will squat.  By taking your puppy immediately to the potty pad when he does this, you will teach him to do it on his own.  Reward your puppy with a special treat if he does it on his own.

Shih tzu puppies between six and twelve weeks of age often suffer from hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.  This condition is often caused by stress. If your dog is listless, wobbly, depressed, or starts vomiting, this may be a sign of hypoglycemia. This is one of the most difficult aspects of shih tzu puppy care because it can come on suddenly and often as a result of the puppy being placed in a new home or being shipped. If your puppy goes unconscious, put a Nutri-cal tablet on his tongue and hold his mouth shut for one minute.  Wrap him up in a blanket and take him to the vet immediately.

Feeding your shih tzu puppy a high quality kibble diet of lamb or chicken can go a long way in preventing these attacks from occurring.
While this only describes the beginning of shih tzu puppy care, don’t feel overwhelmed.Shih tzu puppies make great companions but there’s no denying that the first few weeks of shih tzu puppy care take some getting used to.After you find your rhythm you’ll find that a shih tzu puppy is relatively easy to take care of and makes a wonderful addition to the family.

Ionic Air Purifier - Innovative Plasmacluster Ions Defence Shield Against Killer Bird Flu Virus

Filed under: News and Views - 18 Feb 2009 from author

In a dramatic press update on 27 August 2008, Sharp Corporation unveiled its latest technological weapon against bird flu! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in destroying the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

With increasing regularity, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic does not just sound terrifying. It is. That’s when a highly contagious and deadly virus goes global, in a very negative sense. The 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 50 million people worldwide is the worst pandemic in human history! World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on 5 October 2005 that the 1918 Spanish flu was caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.

Is your heart pounding away? Is it time to PANIC?

Not now. Statistically, as recorded by WHO as at 10 Sep 2008, “only” 245 people have died from the H5N1 virus. This is since 1996 when the virus first surfaced in China. So what’s the fuss? Scientists monitoring the virus fear that it may mutate into a form that transmits from human to human. As of now, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. But if (it seems the virus has not reached the “when” stage) the dreaded virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

Countries are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At the individual level, we should start making preparations too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Is it not just another ordinary ionic air purifier? It is ordinary in that it performs the usual functions of the run-of-the-mill air purifier by getting rid of dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine and pet odours, pollutants, allergens etc. If there is really a tested defence shield against a deadly virus, why not? With Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion Air Purifier, the whole complete package is promised.

Obviously, for the value-conscious, the next logical question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? Sharp claims that it’s at no extra cost! Sharp contends that it is cheaper than any other ordinary ionic air purifier when measured over 5 years. Great value for our hard-earned money! But, how is this possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

In promoting the Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX, Sharp contends that it is definitely better value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At first sight, the typical competitor’s upfront cost of US$160 looks cheap compared to Sharp’s US$399. But add in the annual replacement filter replacement costs of US$100 and the total outlay for the competing ionic air purifier comes to US$560.

If you have relevant data, be it on Sharp or the competitors, I would greatly appreciate your input. Feel free to drop me a note if you have actual numbers.

Meanwhile, I’m going to seriously investigate this Sharp Plasmacluster IonTechnology. Especially since bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Its never too soon to get ready. I have been there. I remember my family, along with thousands of other frantic people, scrambling around town looking for the much-touted N95 face mask when the last near-pandemic scare took place in Asia. It was the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus. Originating in Asia in 2003, it eventually infected 8,096 people around the world and resulted in 774 fatalities. As always, being prepared is half the battle won.

Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.
