Boy Dog Names – Picking Boy Dog Names Isn’t Always Easy

Many people that choose a male puppy also want to choose one of the boy dog names that involve concepts of masculine features such as strength, courage and fearlessness. Unlike female dogs, boy dog names tend to be more assertive and strong, rather than sounding soft and friendly. There are many different ways to choose a good name for your male puppy, and a few are discussed below.

Old Standbys and Favorites

As with most names there are some boy dog names that are just perennial favorites. Often these names are very old and may appear in literature, the movies or even on TV. Some examples of old favorites are:

  • Max
  • Rover
  • Fido
  • Spot
  • Patch
  • Tippy
  • Frisky
  • Sparky

There are more current names that have hit the favorites list, but they are more specific to the type of male dog. A few of these names are:

  • Spike
  • Tex
  • Rocky
  • Terminator
  • Tramp

Usually these more modern popular names tend to be based on TV or movie characters that have strong stereotypical masculine characteristics.

Kids favorites

Since children are many times the ones responsible for naming the family dog, there is often a great influence from what is currently in fashion in movies and kids’ toys. Simba, Rajah, Aladdin, Buzz Lightyear, Fred Flinstone, Barney, Coyote, Milo and even Sponge Bob are all popular boy dog names.

Kids tend to think of the dog as a cute little puppy. It is important to remind your children that one day both the dog (as well as they themselves) will be older. They may not be so willing to call out the backdoor for Buzz Lightyear when they are fifteen or sixteen years old!

Cultural Names

Boy dog names are often derived from the country that the breed of dog came from. Breeds from the United Kingdom often have names such as:

  • Jep
  • Jess
  • Lad or Laddie
  • Ace
  • Tipper
  • Mickey
  • Topper

For breeds from other countries the names will reflect that country's language and culture. American breeds or mixed breeds may have names such as Bubba, Sammy, Fido and Snoopy. Often dogs are named after famous people both within the culture and from outside of the culture. It is not uncommon to have dogs named Lincoln, Churchill, Prince and even King. Popular singers, musicians and sports figures' names can also be used.

Male dogs can also be named after ranks in the military. Soldier, Trooper, Sergeant, Major and even Captain are often boy dog names that are given to puppies, regardless of their breed or features.

Personality

Some dogs just seem to reflect a personality, even as a puppy. Many boy dog names include these characteristics. They may include such names as:

  • Chaos
  • Damage
  • Ace
  • Commander
  • Rascal
  • Rowdy
  • Tiger

The key to choosing a good name for your male puppy is to keep it simple and something that is unique to your dog. Choosing from the boy dog names is not easy, but once you hit on just the right name, you'll know immediately.
