Dog Breeders – What To Look For In A Dog Breeder

Buying your puppy from one of the many reputable dog breeders is a good idea, whether or not you're planning on showing or breeding the dog. A reputable dog breeder can provide information on the lineage of the puppy, will have health and vet checks available, and will provide registration papers and all necessary documents. In addition, quality dog breeders will be there to provide assistance with the puppy and even later in the dog's life.

The opposite of a reputable dog breeder is a backyard breeder. A backyard breeder is usually a person that just wants to make some “easy” money by breeding their purebred dog to another purebred. These breeders rarely consider the lineage, possible hereditary conditions, or even properly care for the female while she's carrying the puppies. In addition, the backyard breeder is often unaware of the breed standards and has no direct knowledge of health issues or concerns that they should be cautious to avoid. The backyard breeder rarely shows their dogs or has any direct connection to an association or breed group. They may advertise the puppies as AKC or CKC or Kennel Club registered, but that simply means that the female and male are registered dogs, it doesn’t mean that they are active members in the organization.

Puppy mills are another form of breeders. They simply breed dogs over and over to produce as many puppies as possible. Puppies sold through pet stores are usually from puppy mills. The females, males, and even puppies, are kept in horrible conditions and are simply a commodity. There is no attempt to breed to enhance the line or to stop hereditary conditions and diseases. Puppy mills never offer health guarantees and many puppies from these breeders cannot be registered because of faults in coat colors and other physical traits. Unsuspecting buyers will purchase puppies at almost the same cost as from one of the reputable dog breeders, only to find their puppy is sick or is not able to be registered, and they have no recourse or ability to return the puppy.

Reputable Dog Breeders

Thankfully there are many wonderful reputable dog breeders that work to enhance the breed, as well as keep puppies healthy and disease free. These breeders study the various lines, have the dogs vet checked before breeding, as well as maintain records on the various lines of breeding stock. Reputable breeders rarely advertise, as they often have a waiting list for puppies, since they only breed when it is appropriate for the health of the mother dog. They watch for temperaments and breed only those dogs that show the appropriate temperament for the breed.

The reputable dog breeders may complete some or all of the following before you can purchase a puppy:

  • Interview the prospective buyer. The breeder may request a home visit or may require you to bring pictures of your house, yard and surroundings.
  • Ask for information about your lifestyle, family and schedule.
  • Require a reference regarding your lifestyle (friend or family member).
  • Ask you to talk about prior pets and pet care.
  • Require that you agree to spay or neuter the puppy at a certain age. They require this to prevent excessive breeding of the type of dog.
  • Require that you take the puppy to obedience classes at a particular trainer.
  • Require that they be allowed to come and check on the puppy.

In addition the breeder will supply the successful candidate to buy a puppy with:

  • Registration papers
  • Health records
  • Vet certificate
  • Bill of Sale
  • Health Guarantee
  • Option to return the dog or puppy at any time in the dog’s life
  • Information about the breed

Reputable dog breeders are always willing to answer questions and stay involved with the puppies they sell. They're also very helpful in providing references for information, services and events in your area that you may require or want to participate in with your dog or puppy. Buying a puppy or dog from a quality dog breeder will ensure that your puppy has the best possible start in life and will provide both the puppy and owner with protection both now and in the future.
